Dear PFLAGers,
The team at Straight for Equality has created a great new resource for healthcare providers: the Straight for Equality in Healthcare guide and website (www.straightforequality.org/healthcare). In these resources, healthcare providers will find ways to create an atmosphere at their practice that welcomes and affirms LGBT people, their families and friends.
We are excited about the official release of Straight for Equality in Healthcare, and want to make PFLAG members part of our outreach to media and other partners to help more people access the resources, so we need your help.
We are searching for PFLAG members who have had experiences with healthcare providers that tell a story about some of the challenges that LGBT people and their supporters sometimes face. As a guideline, consider these questions:
– Have you ever felt uncomfortable in a healthcare setting because of issues related to sexual orientation or gender identity?
– Has a healthcare provider ever said or done something that showed that they had negative attitudes about LGBT people and/or issues?
– Has a healthcare provider ever expressed support for LGBT people and/or issues?
– Has a provider been supportive and responsive to the needs of LGBT people above and beyond the call of duty?
If you have a story about an experience in a healthcare setting, good or bad, we want to hear about it! You know how important personal stories are in opening hearts and minds. We want to use your stories to get healthcare providers interested and involved in Straight for Equality in Healthcare.
So please, send us your stories! E-mail your stories to jhandy@pflag.org. We’ll contact you to follow-up if your story can be used for our outreach. We need to collect stories ASAP, so please send your stories to us no later than Feb. 1. (Be sure to forward this message to your chapter members, too!)
Thank you for all that you do.
Sincerely,
Julie
